Over the past few months, I have had the opportunity to work at a company called Job Machine. Job Machine was started by Brandon Tigges, a Grove City College grad, who has done well in sales in the tech industry as well as creating multiple other entrepreneurial ventures. He was also involved with Geko robotics, another Grove City College grad started business. Job Machine is an online service that helps veterans find jobs. More specifically, Job Machine gets clients that are schools that teach veterans tech and IT skills. Then the platform utilizes a bunch of systems to help each candidate find a job that suits them well. Through my time at Job Machine, I have developed a lot of skills that I believe translate well to sales. A large portion of my job is to help our candidates find a job and offer any help and encouragement and optimization to ensure they get a job. I have talked to hundreds of different people that are all trying to find a job in a difficult market, and I need to figure out how to help them. I noticed that if I would be too energetic, that could annoy the people that I was calling, once I relaxed my tone, people would trust me more and open up. I would also look at which interviews people had coming up and what they had in the past, so I knew about the candidate before reaching out to them. I would end up calling over 100 people in a day, hoping that some of them would pick up and give me an update. There would sometimes be hours where nobody would pick up the phone, which definitely happens in the sales world. I also learned that so much of what I had to do to be successful was by asking the right questions and actually listening to the person that I am trying to help, and through this I would be helped too.

Owen sounds like a great opportunity! This sounds similar to Andrew’s experience with job machine that he mentioned last week. Look forward to hearing more about the company and potential opportunities!
Hey, Owen! Great blog post. That is awesome that you have had the opportunity to work at Job Machine, and that the founder worked with Gecko Robotics too (I’ve heard a lot about Gecko during my time at Grove City).
At the end of your post you said, “so much of what I had to do to be successful was by asking the right questions and actually listening to the person that I am trying to help, and through this I would be helped too.” This reminded me of a quote from Zig Ziglar: “You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” I think this is true and you put it in your own words pretty well.
