In this scene, Brad Pitt is trying to create a baseball team that is successful using data rather than just pure talent. In order to do that, he needs to acquire players that can simply get on base. Jonah Hill is Brad Pitt’s right-hand man, constantly making suggestions and making sure Brad Pitt does not make any mistakes. Through this scene, we can see many different sales tactics that Brad and Jonah use in order to achieve their goal. To begin the viewer can clearly see the value each man brings to the equation. Jonah is the numbers guy who knows players batting percentages by memory. Brad Pitt on the other hand is the people person who is able to use his charm and sales tactics to secure players. As the scene continues it is important to see how Brad Pitt goes from person to person, calling different team managers and coaches. I noticed how he does not use small talk or start with a story; he simply gets to the point. While this sales tactic is not always used, it can be very efficient when it comes to the sports industry. Brad Pitt seems to have a good-if not decent- relationship with everyone he calls on the phone. Since it can be seen that he already has a connection with them, he can sell without having to waste his time selling himself. It is also important to see how confident and cunning Brad is in this scene. In this business, it is important to be able to think on your feet in order to get the sale done. No pain, no sale as they say. Lastly, Brad Pitt is able to make the sale (with the help of Jonah Hill) and he acquires the player he wanted. Through these tactics, viewers can see what it takes in order to sell, especially in an environment like sports.

I love what you’ve highlighted here. This scene, and really the whole movie, highlight how sales is a multifaceted industry and you cannot succeed with just one skill. Both Jonah Hill’s analytical expertise in finding background information on the players, as well as Brad Pitt’s people skills with the managers are both equally as valuable in the process of creating the team and selling themselves to the players and managers.
