In November of 2020, many months into the covid pandemic and as we were approaching the winter, my family was talking about what we were going to do over our “extended winter break”. Our school district decided to start winter break early because they were worried about people catching covid and the higher risk of illness with the cold weather. I brought up the idea to my family of redoing our basement, because although it was finished, it wasn’t very nice and there wasn’t really anything for me and my siblings to do down there. My parents were hesitant at first, but after many conversations, they decided we should do it.

My family went about it in a very “sales-like” way. Once my parents were on board, they started asking us general, open-ended questions to figure out what we wanted our redesigned basement to look like. Their questions were much like those that Coach DiDonato was describing to us. They asked us how we envisioned using the basement as we got older, what kind of vibe and feel we wanted it to have, and what kind of decorations and activities we thought would be best. We decided as a family that we wanted to get a pool table, and shortly after we all went to a store to look at one that my mom found online.

When we got to the store, a man greeted us in a friendly way, asking us what was bringing us in that day and many other questions to learn about our needs. He cared a lot about what our family was looking for, including size, design, and color. He asked questions about the space we were planning on putting it in, how we envisioned it, and how soon we were hoping to have it in. He was very helpful and we ended up choosing a pool table from that store. The salesman did a great job getting to know our needs rather than just pushing us towards what he liked best or what may have been the most profitable for him.
