One very important aspect about sales is the idea of networking. A good salesperson is always curious in meeting people no matter who they may be. As for me, I feel as if I am always curious about other people and this has helped me. For example, the way in which I received my job for post-graduation was due to networking. As for myself, my good friend in high school Matthew, and I were talking about life after college. He brought to my attention that his father is the VP of a large insurance brokerage in which he had sales reps. From this information, I began to become curious and so I asked Mr. Griffin to get coffee. From this coffee, I was able to show my curiosity and that lead into an internship the following summer.
During this internship, I was able to be even more curious in the office. This led to more and more people talking to me and for me to get my name deeper and deeper within the company. Ultimately, this led to a job offer in which I begin this summer.
As from this story, the idea of becoming genuinely curious in other people has taken me a long way in the sales world. As for sales, it is crucial not develop a want to learn about other people. This cannot come from a non-genuine manner because this is easily tracible. Whenever I am talking to someone and I can tell they are just asking questions and not listening, this shows right through them and the trust is lost. Instead, we are to train ourselves to become truly interested in other people and to ask questions that we genuinely have interest in asking. This is an idea in sales that cane take people to the next level.
Networking is such an unbelievably crucial aspect of being a part of the business world. I feel that the phrase “it is more about who you know, not what you know” rings truer every year I get older. The awesome part about networking is that you’re just getting to know people, like you said. Though this can be uncomfortable for me at times, I am glad to be pushed out of my comfort zone if it means building a bigger network web.
