I found this a very interesting concept when I first came across this video, but upon taking this class, I was able to gauge out the tactics used in this video. The first part of the video is showing the sellers trying to sell their mop through demonstrating the product. Similar to what guess speaker Professor Smith mentioned, demos don’t mean sales. There needs to be a need for it to sell.

In the video, they change their tactics. Suddenly, the seller becomes the customer. While this isn’t focused on in the video, I think we should take note the use of the seller becoming the customer. In one way, they can mimic the customer needs and try to understand their pain. Of course, that’s not really the tactic used in the video, but could be noted. Next, the seller tries out the mop for herself and begins talking about what she likes about the mop. Here, she is offering features she thinks is a big pain for the onlooking customers. The other seller answers in kind, playing her part in their role play.

Through their dialogue, other customers become curious about the mop and its qualities. People suddenly become interested from what the other seller is doing–acting as them. While I am not sure such a tactic works in a real sales situation, I think it’s important to take note some interesting factors here. One is how customers actually listen to customers over sellers when it comes to certain sales. Think of reviews and word-of-mouth. When a seller starts saying something, customers tune them out, especially when it doesn’t feel personal. However, when they see another customer talking about something, they might start to listen because they believe in genuine opinions. This is an interesting sales technique we haven’t really talked about, but I think customer reviews and opinions are important in sales and help sellers to target other potential customers.
