One of my favorite phrases Dr. Sweet mentioned in his class today was “shut up and listen.” The article, Mastering Sales Conversations with Effective Questioning, emphasizes the importance of active listening. You can put on a face, like Dr. Sweet mentioned in class, let your eyes glaze over and put on a focused expression, but mastering the art of active listening and responding accordingly is a huge asset in sales. If people feel heard and cared for, they are much more likely to let their guard down and listen to what you are offering. If your responses seem automated, there is less of a relationship being built. The article says, “It requires active listening, adaptability, and the ability to think on your feet. Open-ended questions are powerful tools in sales conversations as they encourage prospects to share more detailed information about their needs, challenges, and expectations.” As Coach Dido said in our class, asking general open-ended questions are crucial to finding out more information, and then responding accordingly is the next step to continue an impactful conversation. In addition, the article mentions finding out your customer’s “pain points” that we discussed in class that will help you discover what exactly you need to help and address to secure your customer. The importance of this tactic is not just the impression it makes on the customer or the sale you may achieve from it, but rather the way we can display our Christian living. As Christians, we are called to be honest in our interactions and value what the other person values, which is what you are doing through active listening and care-filled responses. In addition to building your career and education, you are showing others what it means to be a follower of Christ and displaying his care for us through our care for them.

  1. This is a great tactic in sales. People often like to talk about themselves too much, so it is extra important to stop and listen to what others have to say. Asking open ended questions is also key! Great stuff!

  2. This was a great post that highlights the importance of listening actively and genuinely in sales conversations. I like how you mentioned the importance of thoughtful responses, since this helps to build trust and demonstrate listening.
