Rob Pitts or as most people liked to call him “Rabbit” on the surface was your stereotypical used car salesmen. But after a minute or two you realize he was something more than that. He was the one of the coolest guys and one of the best salesmen i ever have known. It is evident in the all of the stories he has told over the years. He had a way with words that very few people have in the way of story telling and getting along of people. And is the godfather of online car sales, he was the first to popularize and successfully sell vehicles on Ebay, which he later was banned from for finding a loop hole in the system breaking the guidelines for fluffing reviews. He is one of the few people ever to receive a lifetime ban from the platform. This only scratches the surface.
Rob “Rabbit” Pitts was a beloved automotive storyteller, entrepreneur, and recently TV personality whose passion for cars and people left a lasting mark on the car community. His life showed how genuine enthusiasm and hard work can turn a niche hobby into a career of sales that inspires millions.
Born July 27, 1979, Pitts grew up far from glamorous showrooms, with a drug addict mother, in a trailer home in South Carolina, but from his father he developed an early fascination with classic pickups, muscle cars, and anything that “rolled and blew smoke out the back.” That down to earth love of machines from his father led him into the family business, Pitts Truck Service in Seneca, South Carolina. Through out his early life he had worked everywhere from selling cars on Ebay for dealerships when he was in high school, to then working at a Ford store and getting the nick name Rabbit, to working at Car Max. All while being a stand up comic on the side. Then eventually on his own venture with his own buy here pay here lot. He has done a little bit of everything and been an insane sales success in all of it. Then more recently he started his own classic car dealer Rabbit’s used Cars and sold mostly American Classic’s.
His big break in popularity came through storytelling. On the VINwiki YouTube channel, his smooth Southern voice and natural timing turned the often gritty world of used cars into a series of memorable adventures with unforgettable one liners and analogies. Fans weren’t just hearing about vehicles; they were drawn into tales of people, places, risks taken along the way, and more importantly life lessons. In 2018, he launched his own YouTube channel, growing that persona into regular content and building a dedicated audience of enthusiasts.

In 2023, Pitts reached an even larger audience as a co-star of the Netflix series “Tex-Mex Motors,” chasing vintage cars in Mexico to restore and resell in the United States. The show confirmed what his followers already knew: he could see value where others saw junk and tell a compelling story about the process. Even after his passing in August 2024 following a battle with stomach cancer, his influence continues through the videos, stories, and inspiration he left behind.

This is a really cool story. One of my favorite things about this is how he was innovative as a salesman, rather than getting stuck in the past like many traditional salesmen, he evolved with the digital age. It’s also impressive that he was this successful with a background like that, it’s always an inspiring under dog story when someone makes something out of nothing. I also think it’s worth noting how he was a salesmen in more than terms of car sales, as an internet personality and television host he had to pitch himself for the camera. Definitely interesting to examine the intersection of sales and non-sales selling.
This was a really interesting and engaging post that highlighted several key aspects of sales. It was helpful to think about the importance of storytelling and charisma when it comes to making sales. Great post!
