Many People don’t connect salesmanship with regular everyday life. However, a large part of our lives is devoted to sales, whether you know it or not. This is easily demonstrated, whenever you want or need something from another person, as you’re trying to sell them on the idea of giving you the item, or following through with an idea. This is called non-sales selling because even though we are not actually exchanging money for something, you still are engaging in a selling experience. Even some types of buying can be a form of selling. When you try to haggle down a price on an item, you are selling the idea that it is a good deal for them to sell the item at a lesser price. So, as you can see, selling can take many forms. With this in mind, we should start to think like a salesman whenever we interact with people. If you do it well, it can help you grow in your relationships with people around you because, as a salesman, one of the most important things for a successful selling experience is to build a relationship with the person. Get to know them, and their problems. You can only sell effectively, if you know what matters most to the person you are speaking to. For example, if you want to visit a friend over break, and you want to convince your parents to let you, you need to understand what might cause them to give in. If you don’t, they will reject your proposition without a moment’s hesitation, but if you do, your chances of success skyrocket. For these reasons, it is important to remember to live your everyday life as a salesman, regardless of what your job is, or who you speak to throughout your day.

  1. I really like the idea of living life as a salesman, we don’t realize how often in our daily interactions we end up effectively selling something – be it an idea, recommendation, or object. Sales isn’t just persuading someone to spend money, it’s persuading someone to give up something in exchange for something else. While this frequently, and most visibly, takes the form of material objects, the same process often occurs when convincing others to spend their time on something, their energy, or simply consider something from a new perspective. The tricks used by successful salesmen can be essential in the non-traditional selling that is hidden but ever present in our lives.

  2. I agree and appreciate your recognition of consistent selling in our lives and using that to forward relationships with others. It’s so easy to see selling as a slimy thing, rather than a way to build relationships and gain perspective. I agree that this can be a useful tactic when speaking with others and learning things about others and situations!

  3. This was an insightful post that demonstrates sales as a key aspect of all relationships, regardless of whether or not they include a financial transaction. Additionally, I agreed with your observation that effective selling relies on a deep understanding of what matters most to the other person.
