It can be argued that finding a date is a form of selling. Like all sales endeavors, dating requires individuals to sell themselves to another person. This may sound a little shallow or utilitarian, but it is true! Dating requires both parties who have interest in each other to show off their best features with the hopes of getting the other person to go out with them. Put simply, an understanding of sales can help (but not guarantee) to get you a date.

Let us start with what not to do when looking for a partner. While cold calls can be helpful for prospecting in most of the sales world, more often than not asking for a random person’s phone number will not work. Prospecting when dating should look a bit different, and in my experience, it should look like having several friends of the opposite gender. Obviously getting to know a person you have interest in is the best method, but having connections with members of the opposite sex can have other advantages too, even making you aware of dating prospects you may have never known otherwise!

Additionally, it is important to remember that not everyone can be sold to. There are people who simply will not be attracted to you and that’s perfectly fine! Sales is riddled with rejection, but like any sales endeavor, the payoff can be exponential when you do find the right prospect. It just takes patience and removal of the “role” self from the “real” self to be successful. The most important thing to remember is that your personal self-worth is not defined by your ability to get a girl or boyfriend.

All this advice may sound a bit generic (I am sure you have probably heard these things plenty of times), but reframing dating in the context of sales can really grant a new perspective. I remember a time when it was hard to separate my “role” self from my “real” self and to accept rejection; if I had known these viewpoints, I might not have been as discouraged as I was though! Wherever you are in the dating world, viewing certain aspects of it as a form of sales can really help you to keep your head up and to continue forward!
