President trump announced that he wants to suspend the federal gas taxes temporarily as gas prices continue to rise due to the ongoing war in Iran, which has lasted 11 weeks total. When trump was speaking to CBS News he said he wants the tax removed for a period of time and later in the interview said it will return to its appropriate. However, suspending the gas tax would need and require approval from Congress. 18.4 is the current federal gas tax per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel. Gas prices have increased dramatically ever since the US bombed Iran Before this conflict escalated, regular gasoline was averaging just under $3 per gallon. AAA says, prices have now climbed more than 50% reaching an average of $4.52 per gallon nationwide. One of the huge reasons for the increase in gas prices is the disruption of oil shipments, the oil comes through a critical waterway where about 1/5 of the world’s oil supply normally passes. Blockades in relation to the war has slowed down tanker traffic which means it is reducing oil supply and driving prices higher everywhere in the world.
